How many calories are in ghee, and how much should you eat?

By Vedika Ghee · 29 July 2026

Ghee is pure milk fat, so it is calorie-dense. But because you use it in small amounts, a normal daily serving adds far fewer calories than people fear. Here are the numbers.

Calories in ghee

ServingApprox weightCalories
1 teaspoonabout 5 gabout 45 kcal
1 tablespoonabout 14 gabout 125 kcal
100 grams100 gabout 900 kcal

Ghee is almost entirely fat, with no carbohydrate or protein, so nearly all of these calories come from fat.

How much ghee per day is fine?

For most healthy adults, 1 to 3 teaspoons a day fits comfortably into a balanced diet. That is roughly 45 to 135 calories, similar to any cooking fat you would use anyway. The key is that ghee replaces other fats in your cooking, rather than being added on top of them.

Is ghee fattening?

Ghee does not make you gain weight on its own. Total calories over the day decide that. Used in place of refined oil, in sensible amounts, ghee is a clean source of fat with a high smoke point and fat-soluble vitamins. Overusing any fat, ghee included, adds up.

Who should be a little careful

If you are managing weight tightly or have been advised to limit saturated fat, keep to the lower end and measure your spoon rather than pouring freely. For everyone else, a daily spoon of good ghee is a reasonable, traditional choice.
