What is the best time to eat ghee?

By Vedika Ghee · 30 July 2026

Ghee is good at any time in sensible amounts, but a few timings are traditionally valued. Here is when a spoon of ghee fits best.

In the morning

A small spoon of ghee in the morning, on a warm roti or in warm water, is a traditional way to start the day. As a clean fat, it gives steady energy and helps you absorb fat-soluble vitamins from your meal.

With meals

Adding ghee to rice, dal or roti during the day is the most common use. It adds flavour and, because fat slows digestion, it can soften the rise in blood sugar from a carbohydrate meal.

At night, in warm milk

A spoon of ghee in warm milk before bed is an old Ayurvedic habit, valued for digestion and restful sleep.

How much per day?

For most healthy adults, 1 to 3 teaspoons a day is sensible, ideally in place of other cooking fats rather than on top of them. You can read more in our note on calories in ghee.

For daily use, a pure A2 Gir cow bilona ghee is the traditional choice.
